Literature Text

Several hours pass. Slowly Maranwë wakes up with a strong headache lying in the cold grass and the sun is shining down on her eyes. “Aaron can you get me some herbs for my head and please close the curtains.” A drop of water falls down on her forehead. She slowly opens her eyes and sees that she is in a forest. Quickly her memories return and she get to her feet. A wave of panic washes over her and tears start flowing down her cheeks. All strength in her legs disappear, forcing her down to her knees unto the cold ground. She falls forward placing her forehead on the ground.
“My baby… please give me back my baby.” She whispers down into the ground. The forest is quiet except for a single crow cawing in the distant. Maranwë sits back up and dries her tears. She remember what Aaron always used to say “I will never give up.” And neither will she. Determined to save their daughter she forces herself up. She gathers her sword and other supplies a few meters away and forces herself to eat and drink to regain strength. Her eyes are clouded with tears making it hard to see. She suppresses the tears by thinking about what does creatures might do to her daughter. There are no tracks from the spirits on the ground but many animal tracks that lead to the east. “The spirits must come from the west scaring away the animals.” Maranwë thinks to herself and starts walking west.
For every passing minuet, with no sign of life, the panic in Maranwë’s body rises. It’s getting darker. Once darkness has fallen there will be no saving her daughter. With anger and panic in her blood she fiercely cuts down a bush in front of her. As she goes through it she trips and falls facedown in the mud next to a small pond. All of her spirit disappears. She gives up. Maranwë rolls over, grabs her hair and her mud covered face and screams. Her voice echoes through the deep forest. She lies flat in the mud. She hears a noise in from over the pond. “Do what you want to me. Just let me see my daughter one last time. I give up.” She whispers.
“Don’t give up.” A small female voice is heard. Suddenly a light shines from the other side of the pond. Maranwë turns around and see a young naked girl with beautiful long hair, shining like gold, sitting on the other side of the pond.
Maranwë gets to her feet with her sword in her hand. “Who are you?”
The girl smiles. “For centuries people have feared me. One wrong step in these woods and I will take your life. This is true.” Maranwë raises her sword ready to fight.
The girl stares into her eyes. “But that is only half the truth. Disrespect the forest and I will not let you leave. I will lead you on falls paths and feed you to the spirits.” She stands up and starts walking over the water towards Maranwë. Her hair touches the water but does not seem to get wet. “But if you have a pure heart and carry the life of the innocent.” She grabs Maranwë’s sword by the blade and Maranwë let’s go. The girl throws the sword into the water. She places her hand on Maranwë’s cheek. It’s warm and comforting. “Maranwë, I will not let the spirits devour your baby.”
Tears start flowing down Maranwë’s face. “Thank you.” She whispers.
The smile on the girls face disappears and she looks serious. “Your daughter has a strong soul. It’s strong enough to make the spirits come out during the day risking their own existence. It has weakened them enough so that they will not be able to eat until nightfall.”
Maranwë still looks concerned. “Even if I find them I can’t defeat them. My sword did nothing.” The girl starts laughing.
“What’s so funny?” Maranwë asks a little annoyed.
The girl gradually stops laughing. Her face turns into a huge grin. “You asked me who I am.” Maranwë looks confused. A strong wind starts blowing creating waves on the pond. The girl walks towards the middle of the pond not bothered by the wind or the waves. “I am the wind blowing through the trees, the water flowing in the stream, the lighting and thunder.” Maranwë’s sword starts rising from the water. The girl grabs it by the hilt. “I am the forest!” A strong light shines from the sword. Maranwë must close her eyes and hold up her hand so not to be blinded. The pond goes quiet. She opens her eyes. The girl is gone. Only thing left is Maranwë’s sword floating on the surface next to her feet. She picks it up and is filled with a new power. The same power that now resides in her sword. She can feel the trees telling her which way to go. With new strength and confidence she follows the whispers of the trees.
Maranwë's search for her daughter continues.
