Literature Text

In the deep forest, Lindwëlian, night has fallen. A young elf maiden named Iris is warming herself next to a fire. She is sleeping sitting up with her head in her arms and wrapped in a cloth. For a long time her sleep have been plagued by nightmares. This night is no different. She is pulled out of her dream and sits up. Her eyes are watery from tears. She rubs her head messing up her shoulder long red hair.
“Another nightmare...” She looks up at the moon and feels sad. “Where are you my beloved?”
She sighs and once more gently rests her head in her arms and manages to fall asleep one more time before morning comes.
Early next morning her journey continues. The forest is thick and she must use her sword to get through at the thickest places. Wines whip in her face and branches catches her sword getting it stuck forcing her to use extra energy to get it out. Many hours later her sword goes through a thick bush and as it falls down sunlight comes flowing through the hole. Iris crouches down and goes under the opening. A gentle breeze caresses her face cooling down her sweat. She wipes it away from her forehead. Away in the northern distance she can see a town, in the west a mountain chain, with peaks stretching over the clouds, and in the east a vast plain as far as the eye can see full with farms and crops.
Iris starts making her way towards the town. Only minutes pass before the fierce sun let’s her know that she has not been able to drink anything since breakfast when she emptied her waterskin. Iris can feel her mouth go drier and drier. Not many meters ahead of her she can see a small stream going under a bridge. She stops next to it and sits down. She takes her waterskin and fills it with the clear water. In the shade of a great oak tree she rests and drinks. The birds are singing in the oak tree and the water is happily playing in the stream. Only moments have passed when suddenly there is a faint sound of howes from down the road growing louder and louder. Iris locates the source of the sound. In the distant three riders are coming down the road, on big strong horses, riding for the town. The royal crest of the queen, showing the outline of a beautiful flower, is clearly visible on their chests. As the riders pass Iris she makes eye contact with one of them. He nods at her in a greeting fashion before continuing towards the town. The horses kick up dust in Iris face making her eyes watery and she starts coughing. She quickly gulps down some water to stop the itching in her throat. She follows the riders as they are already at the gate of the town. She frown at the thought of her itching throat and drinks some more water.
Refreshed and well rested her journey continues. Over the bridge and down the road she goes towards the town. Not before long she reaches the gate where two guards, in full armor and with big spears, stand on duty. They happily welcome all who passes by to their town. Passed the gates she spots the riders. The same man who greeted Iris is standing on a wooden box surrounded by people who are eagerly listening to whatever message the queens royal messengers might have.
“Your queen needs you. Ghelak’s have once again been spotted in the outer regions of Ilmaril’s borders.” The rider proclaims to the people.
The crowd starts talking to one another with lowered voices.
“Is this really true?” A man in the crowd says followed by a woman shouting.
“What can we do?”
A small panic is heard coming from the people. The rider holds up his hands trying to calm down the crowd.
“We need warriors to the royal army. Old and young. You who are willing to join will be welcomed with open arms. Tomorrow we will all meet inside of that inn.”
He points towards an inn a few meters behind him.
“The sleeping dragon.”
The crowds starts going in different directions thinking about what to do. The old remembers the old war against the Ghelak and the younger have heard stories. Horrifying stories. No man in this town will sleep soundly tonight. The riders starts putting up posters describing the process of joining the army.
Iris does not know what these Ghelak are so she just shrugs at the idea of joining the army but heads for the Inn to rent a room.
This is the beginning of my fantasy novel "The wayfarer" (I might change the name since it's just a working name).
I'm mainly uploading this here to see if there's any interest in reading my story about Iris and her quest to find her beloved. So what do you guys think? Do you want to read more? ^^
